Pedal Power for Kenyan Education

Pedal power for Kenyan Education

In most rural parts of Kenya, the journey to school is often long and arduous. Many students, particularly girls, face the daunting challenge of walking up to 10 kilometers each day just to reach their classrooms. This daily struggle not only impacts their attendance but also their safety, academic performance, and overall well-being. At GAP Kenya, we recognized this barrier to education and sought to provide a solution that would change the narrative for these young learners. The Pedal Power for Kenyan Education Program was born out of this vision—to ensure that distance is no longer a deterrent to education.

Empowering Education Through Mobility

Since the launch of the program, GAP Kenya has distributed over 500 durable Buffalo bicycles to students in 13 secondary schools across Busia County. These bicycles are not just a means of transport; they are lifelines that have significantly transformed the educational experiences of the beneficiaries.

our impact

The provision of bicycles has led to a remarkable 30% increase in daily school attendance. Students who previously arrived late or missed school altogether due to the long distances they had to walk are now able to attend school consistently and arrive on time. With reliable transportation, they start their day in a more focused and energized state, ready to engage fully in their learning.

The impact of the Pedal Power program extends beyond just getting students to school. By ensuring regular attendance and punctuality, students are more engaged in their studies, resulting in a notable 15% improvement in academic performance across participating schools. Teachers have reported that students are more attentive and able to keep up with the curriculum, leading to better grades and higher pass rates.

One of the most critical outcomes of this program is the enhanced safety it provides for young girls. In rural areas, the long journey to school often leaves girls vulnerable to exploitation and the risk of teenage pregnancies. By equipping them with bicycles, the program has significantly reduced these risks, as girls no longer need to rely on potentially dangerous offers of transportation from strangers. This independence has not only safeguarded their futures but has also boosted their confidence and sense of security.

In many rural Kenyan communities, families are struggling to make ends meet, with most parents being smallholder farmers or underemployed. The daily cost of transportation can be a significant financial burden, one that often forces difficult choices between education and other essential needs. Through the Pedal Power program, families save an estimated KES 3,000 per term in transportation costs. This financial relief allows them to allocate resources to other vital areas, such as food, healthcare, and school supplies, thereby improving their overall quality of life.

The Pedal Power for Kenyan Education Program is more than just an initiative to provide bicycles; it is a holistic approach to breaking the cycle of poverty through education. By removing the barriers that prevent students from accessing education, we are paving the way for a new generation of young Kenyans who are empowered, educated, and equipped to build a better future for themselves and their communities.

For our donors, this program represents an opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of these students. Every bicycle we provide is a tool for empowerment—a means to unlock the potential that lies within each child. The success of this program is a testament to what can be achieved when we invest in the education and well-being of our youth.
